Aritzo

Aritzo is a picturesque mountain town nestled on the western slope of the Gennargentu range, 800 metres above sea level.

Home to just over a thousand residents, it is surrounded by chestnut and hazelnut groves and renowned for its traditional woodworking – especially its beautifully hand-carved wooden chests.

As a charming mountain holiday destination, Aritzo offers pristine nature, fresh air, and crystal-clear spring water, such as Is Alinos, Giaria and Funtana de Sant'Antoni.

Visitors will find a wealth of cultural and historical landmarks, including the parish church of San Michele Arcangelo, the church of Sant'Antonio da Padova, the 16th-century Spanish prisons of "Sa Bovida", and several elegant historic villas. In the heart of the small town lies Casa Devilla, the elegant 17th-century residence of the "Lords of the Snow". Nearby, you will find Arangino Castle, built in 1917 in a neo-medieval style. In Pastissu Municipal Park, the Ethnographic Museum brings to life the traditional agro-forestry-pastoral culture of the Gennargentu region through thousands of fascinating exhibits. Art lovers can also explore the Antonio Mura Museum, dedicated to the local painter and engraver.

The snow pits of Funtana Cungiada, once used to store and trade ice, bear witness to a thriving snow industry that lasted into the early twentieth century. Its legacy lives on in the traditional "Carapigna", a local sorbet.

The Chestnut and Hazelnut Festival celebrates the village's natural and cultural heritage.
