Birthplace of Antonio Mura
The birthplace of the painter Antonio Mura is a building dating back to the 19th century. The building has three levels, featuring simple finishes and vertically aligned openings. Originally formed by joining multiple adjacent rooms, the building is marked by a stone plinth, string course, and cornice.
The former Antonio Mura house retains the original Barbaricino style intact, as it has never been altered by architectural changes, but only by internal adaptations aimed at enhancing functionality. The building is now divided between two properties: part of this building was sold by the heirs to private individuals, while the portion now owned by the Municipality in the 1970s was donated by the heirs to the Parish of San Michele Arcangelo.
Antonio Mura, a gifted painter and engraver, is one of the most important Sardinian artists of the 20th century. A well-rounded artist, both in terms of professional training and cultural background, he loved to portray the faces of his people, especially children and the elderly, whose joy, serenity, and profound depth he captured, glorifying life in all its manifestations. He was born in Aritzo on 12 January 1902, the last of five brothers, to an ancient and esteemed family, and died in Florence on 7 April 1972.
